Katydid in Wayne adds new signature line of sports memorabilia
With a name like Katydid you wouldn’t expect to find walls covered with photos of bruising hockey defensemen and menacing linebackers.
Yes, you’ll still find handbags, stuffed animals, fine stationery, greeting cards, wedding invitations and baby gifts, all hallmarks of this longtime Wayne store.
But now Katydid has another signature product – a full line of signed sports memorabilia sure to appeal to the guy who may be somewhat hesitant to venture into a shop where a cute, little green insect appears above the door.
Katydid now partners with BC Sports to provide autographed framed photos, hockey pucks, bats, baseballs and jerseys of the legends of Philly sports, past and present. Bernie Parent, Dr. J, Bobby Clarke, Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Cliff Lee, Michael Vick and Danny Briere are just some of the athletes whose memorabilia don the walls.
“Every piece is signed and authenticated,” pointed out Tredyffrin resident Dale Centofante, who co-owns Katydid with his sister, Deanna of Wayne.
The partnership with BC Sports was facilitated, explained Dale, through his wife, Caroline, who has worked with the Exton-based company for 17 years. BC Sports stores and kiosks are usually found in malls.
Dale started stocking the signed memorabilia about five months ago. The front glass counter case is lined with baseballs signed by former and current Phillies including Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Cole Hamels, Shane Victorino and Roy Halladay. One wall is displayed with Phillies and Eagles players while another is largely hung with photos of Flyers players including scoring sensation Claude Giroux and new goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.
Among the more eye-catching items is a large photo of the Eagles’ Chuck Bednarik, an iconic sports image of the linebacker standing over an unconscious Frank Gifford, whom he had just knocked to the ground, on Nov. 20, 1960, at Yankee Stadium. It is signed, “Sorry, Frank. This f……g game is over.” Another peculiar item is a Pete Rose baseball signed, “I’m sorry I bet on baseball.” There is also a signature photo of jockey Stewart Eliot riding local thoroughbred Smarty Jones during the Kentucky Derby. It is signed, “Go, Smarty, Go.” There is a mini-Villanova football helmet signed by Brian Westbrook, a sentimental item for those who remember the outstanding rusher during his early Main Line days. And that famous photo of Brad Lidge and Carlos Ruiz celebrating the 2008 World Series victory? They have it signed by the two Phillies.
“People are kind of floored,” Dale said about the sports memorabilia. “They haven’t seen this before.”
Prices range from a signed Rick Tocchet puck at $29.99 to a signed and framed Cliff Lee jersey at $599.99.
Dale, who had lunch with Steve Carlton and posed for a picture with Pete Rose since his involvement with BC Sports, said one his goals is to arrange in-house signings with athletes at the store.
Dale and Deanna said the signed merchandise has been selling well. Deanna mentioned that a customer recently bought signed hockey pucks for a bride and groom.
Dale noted that the signed items make ideal fundraising auction items where Katydid offers them on consignment with the charity event.
To complement the signed stuff, Dale and Deanna also have a display of local pro-sports gifts such as Flyers baby bibs and Phillies mugs.
